Champion spotlight: Jason Gamble
Jason Gamble is a Team Priority Health Champion from Wayne County in Westland, Mich. With over 300 Champions, Team Priority Health was established in 2013 as a way to engage community members in their health. Champions are dedicated to healthy lifestyles and spreading the word about the positive effects of health and wellness.
In 2005, Jason learned he had high blood sugar and was prescribed medication to help manage his condition. This new diagnosis hit him hard and Jason knew he needed to do something to improve his health to prevent larger concerns like diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, exercise helps lower blood sugar levels. After seeing his wife Amy, lose about 90 pounds through her new eating habits, exercise regimen and Champions participation, Jason believed he too, could have better health outcomes of his own.
With Amy's encouragement, Jason made the leap to become a Champion last year.
"I started being more active after Amy signed up for her first 5k three years ago, and I thought, if she can do it, I can too," said Jason. "I've jogged on the treadmill and worked out off and on for years, but never really stuck with it consistently until Amy got a membership at Planet Fitness and started training for 5ks. She challenged me to join her and she truly inspired me."
Jason ran his first of several 5ks in April 2014 and continues to run more each and every year.
Since his dedication to turn his lifestyle around, Jason has lost 25 pounds! Now that his blood sugar numbers are in the normal range he has been able to discontinue some of the diabetic medications and is working towards being med-free very soon.
Jason's primary activity for making good health a habit is a daily jog on the treadmill. "Jogging is what I attribute most to my weight loss and maintaining it to get ready for 5k runs," said Jason. For variety, he also loves playing tennis with his wife when time allows.
Not only has Jason's wife inspired him, but together, Jason and Amy serve as positive healthy role models for their three children: Emily (14), Josh (11) and Rachel (7). All are active in various sports and can count on their parents to act as their biggest cheerleaders. In fact, Jason helps to coach his son's baseball team and was a devoted fan of both of his daughters who used to play soccer. Emily enjoys going to boot camp workout classes with her mom. Rachel just completed her first 5k with Amy and the Girls On The Run program.
You can do it too
When Jason was asked what advice he had for others who are trying to become more active, his response was, "Find something that gets you moving and off the couch, even if it's just walking for 30 minutes a day; you need to start somewhere."
Jason is a shining example of taking charge of one's health. Studies show that it takes about 21 days to form a habit. Whether it's getting a gym membership like Jason did, or walking around the neighborhood every day, set your goal and dedicate yourself to achieving it. You are worth it!
Be a Champion
Jason loves the benefits that come with being a Champion and encourages others to join Team Priority Health.
"The program reimburses the money it costs for races, which is even more of an incentive to keep doing more 5ks," said Jason. "Then when race time comes around, you get to see other people in Priority Health gear running and cheering alongside you."
It also helps him be the best version of himself.
"As a Champion, I know there are a lot of other people trying to get healthy right along with me. Take the step towards being healthy with a group of people just like you and me. Anyone can do it and feel better about themselves!"
