What does "special enrollment" mean, anyway?

If you — or someone you know — has experienced a "qualifying life event" you can enroll in an individual plan during a Special Enrollment Period.

A Special Enrollment Period is a 60-day window after certain life events in which you, your family or anyone you know can enroll in or change your health care coverage. Why is this important? Special enrollment falls outside of the annual Open Enrollment Period, which ended on Jan. 31.

How to enroll during a Special Enrollment Period

Follow these steps:

  1. Find a plan and get pricing.
  2. Make sure you have required proof documents (see above).
  3. Enroll in your plan.
